Overview
The Certificate in Maritime, Business and Strategic Management provides an integrated introduction to the maritime industry together with essential principles of marketing and strategic management.

The programme introduces students to ship types, registration and nationality, international maritime organisations, marine insurance terminology, bills of lading, cargo operations, classification societies and the International Safety Management framework. It also develops an understanding of marketing, consumer behaviour, market research, pricing, promotional strategy and strategic management.

The programme is designed for those seeking a broader understanding of how maritime operations and commercial management interact within the international shipping industry.

Objectives
The programme aims to:

  • Provide a foundation in the structure and operation of the international maritime industry.
  • Introduce key legal, regulatory and operational concepts relevant to shipping.
  • Develop an understanding of fundamental marketing and business-management principles.
  • Introduce strategic analysis, competitive advantage and strategy formulation.
  • Enable students to relate business and management concepts to maritime organisations and commercial shipping practice.
  • Develop the ability to apply knowledge through an integrated maritime and business-management project.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the programme, students should be able to:

  • Identify major types of ships and explain their principal commercial functions.
  • Explain ship registration, nationality, flags of convenience and the role of international maritime organisations.
  • Demonstrate understanding of commonly used marine insurance, cargo and shipping terminology.
  • Explain the purpose of bills of lading, classification societies and the International Safety Management framework.
  • Describe key principles of marketing, consumer behaviour, market research, pricing and promotion.
  • Analyse basic features of an organisation’s external and internal business environment.
  • Explain the concepts of competitive advantage, strategic options and strategy formulation.
  • Apply maritime, business and strategic-management principles to a practical or case-based project.

Entry Requirements

High School diploma.

English language: GCSE English Language grade 4/C – IB grade 4 Higher Level. If your first language is not English, you will need an IELTS of 6.0 overall, with 5.5 in each component. We will consider applicants without an English certificate but who have relevant working experience or completed a course taught in English.
