This course covers maritime chartering, starting with key stakeholders, ship terminology, vessel types, cargo families, and freight markets, then advancing to voyage and time charterparties, estimation methods, laytime calculations, and negotiation procedures.It equips learners with the commercial and operational insights needed to understand and engage in global shipping contracts.
This course is designed for shipping executives, naval officers, professionals from various backgrounds (lawyers, bankers, economists, engineers, naval architects), and young professionals seeking careers in the maritime industry.

Objectives

  • Identify roles of individuals in chartering, recognize ship terminology, vessel classifications, cargo types, and freight market dynamics.
  • Explain voyage charterparties, perform voyage estimations, and calculate laytime.
  • Analyze time charter agreements and conduct time charter estimations.
  • Apply negotiation methods and draft charterparty documents for real-world scenarios.

Learning Outcomes

  • Upon completion of this course, course participants will be able to identify the roles and responsibilities of key stakeholders in chartering operations, including charterers, shipowners, brokers, and port authorities, thereby understanding the chartering ecosystem.
  • Course participants will recognize ship terminology, classify vessel types, and understand the relationship between ship characteristics and cargo suitability, thereby building competence in ship classification and vessel operations.
  • They will categorize main cargo families and interpret freight market dynamics, trends, and major commercial ports, enabling them to analyze cargo structures and market conditions effectively.
  • Course participants will explain voyage charterparty concepts, perform voyage estimations, and calculate laytime and demurrage liability, allowing them to evaluate and apply voyage charterparty principles in practice.
  • They will analyze time charter agreements, conduct time charter estimations, and understand rate structures and commercial terms, applying time charter principles to real-world scenarios.
  • Finally, course participants will apply negotiation methods to charterparty discussions and draft effective charterparty documents aligned with industry standards, demonstrating competence in contract negotiation and drafting.

Entry Requirements

High School diploma.

English language: GCSE English Language grade 4/C – IB grade 4 Higher Level. If your first language is not English, you will need an IELTS of 6.0 overall, with 5.5 in each component. We will consider applicants without an English certificate but who have relevant working experience or completed a course taught in English.
