Overview
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) in in Maritime Law and Shipping Management, is a specialized program meticulously designed to delve deep into the multifaceted world of maritime law and shipping management. Through a blend of theoretical modules and practical applications, this program covers a vast spectrum—from the essentials of ship types and maritime operations to the complex legalities surrounding the carriage of goods by sea. With an emphasis on real-world scenarios and case studies, students will be immersed in both the operational and legal dimensions of maritime activities. While the course core remains focused on maritime law and shipping, it also briefly branches into elective areas, allowing students a brief exploration beyond the central maritime realm.

Objectives
The primary objectives of this course are to:

  • Utilize knowledge of International Maritime Organization (IMO) conventions, maritime zones, and relevant laws to formulate strategic solutions to maritime challenges.
  • Assess and strategize dispute resolutions based on arbitration principles and alternative methodologies.
  • Demonstrate deep insight into marine insurance, identifying and applying various policies, clauses, and associated risk factors.
  • Engage in and contribute original research, offering fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to the maritime sector through well-structured project reports and case studies.

1. Maritime Operations and Shipping Management
Shipowning departments, maritime careers, shipping terminology, ship types, nationality, flags, IMO conventions, sales contracts, B/L, cargo terms/operations, classification/ISM.

2. Maritime Trade, Port and Cargo Operations
Port expenses, agency services, unitized cargo, grains, timber, minerals, chemicals, dangerous goods, cargo disputes, documents, world ports, Port State Control.

3. Carriage of Goods by Sea and Chartering
Commercial shipping and chartering: shipbrokers, Baltic Exchange, liability, laydays, NOR, demurrage, time charters, Worldscale, crude oil transport, procedures, negotiations, contracts.

4. Marine Environment, Pollution
Marine Environmental Protection Regulations and Case Studies. Marine Debris & Hazardous Pollutants: Antifouling, Ghost Gear & Radiological Risk.

5. Marine Insurance
Marine Insurance Law & Practice: MIA 1906, Lloyd’s, Insurable Interest & Utmost Good Faith. Proximate cause, risks, losses and liabilities.

6. Law of the Sea
Maritime zones: Evolution & Maritime Zones (Geneva 1958–UNCLOS 1982). Advanced Law of the Sea: Port Jurisdiction, Shelf Delimitation, Straits & TSS, Piracy/Hot Pursuit, The Area & Dispute Settlement.

7. Alternative Disputes Resolution (ADR), Arbitration, Mediation
English Legal System & Arbitration, ADR, Ethics & UNCITRAL Arbitration Law & Practice: Agreement, Tribunal & Court Powers, Awards, Enforcement & Costs.

8. Ocean Circulation and Biological Ocean Process
Seawater, salinity; Ocean and boundary currents; Plankton, zooplankton, holoplankton; Nekton, fishes and mammals, migration; Waves, abnormal waves, tsunamis; Tides, energy from tides.

9. Maritime Economics & Finance
Maritime finance and Quantum finance, Strategic management, Risk management, Maritime economics.

10. Research Methods
From ideas to researchable questions, Literature, ethics, and research integrity, Methodologies, sampling, and quality criteria, Data analysis, visualization, and reporting.

11. Dissertation
An original, supervised research project addressing a maritime or marine-science problem, demonstrating literature synthesis, rigorous methodology, data analysis, and professional practice; submitted as a written dissertation and defended orally.

Entry Requirements

Bachelor of Science (BSc) or other Higher Education degree, or experienced professionals.

English language: GCSE English Language grade 4/C – IB grade 4 Higher Level. If your first language is not English, you will need an IELTS of 6.0 overall, with 5.5 in each component, or a related certificate of English language course. Proficiency or Lower Certificate in English, or good writing and communication skills in English (at the discretion of the Committee).
