Overview

The “Electronics I” module is a foundational course designed for BSc Physics students that covers the essential concepts of electronics. The module includes:

  • Diodes: p-n junction diode, n-type and p-type doped semiconductors, rectification, and Shockley diode equation
  • Transistors: npn bipolar junction transistor, current-gain, and operation in saturation and linear modes
  • Operational amplifiers: circuits analyzed using the “golden rules,” ideal operational amplifier, operational amplifier with negative feedback, and non-ideal operational amplifiers
  • Digital logic gates: binary and hexadecimal number representations, and truth-tables for gate functions
  • Flip-flop circuits: used for storing numbers and performing adding and counting operations
  • Conversion methods: techniques for converting analogue signals to digital signals and vice versa.

Objectives

The objectives of the module are to:

  • Introduce students to the basic principles of electronics and their practical applications
  • Provide students with a strong understanding of diodes, transistors, operational amplifiers, and digital logic gates
  • Develop students’ skills in designing and analyzing simple electronic circuits
  • Equip students with knowledge of analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue conversion methods
  • Enable students to use basic electronic components in simple circuits

    Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to:

    • Understand the basic principles of diodes, transistors, and operational amplifiers
    • Analyze and design simple electronic circuits using diodes, transistors, and operational amplifiers
    • Understand the principles of digital logic gates and flip-flop circuits
    • Design and analyze simple digital circuits using logic gates and flip-flops
    • Understand the principles and applications of analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue conversion methods
    • Apply the principles of electronics in various fields such as communications, computing, and instrumentation.
